CRAZY AMERICAN BOY + CRAZY ENGLISH GIRL

April 22, 2011

This is more of a personal post, but I just wanted to share with everyone how happy I am because I GET TO REUNITE WITH MY WIFE TONIGHT! Long story short, my wife is English and I'm an American, and we've been living in England since November 2010 until I was told to return to the States to get my Spouse Visa. So I flew back, prepped my application, applied, then got approved! That started 2 MONTHS ago, and haven't seen my dear wife since! And now, she's flying out here to visit me so we can celebrate (since I can't fly back until May). And if you don't know our story of how we met, then you should check out this cute video I made! Enjoy!

GREAT, ANOTHER "VINTAGE" PHOTO (part 1)

April 21, 2011

I'll be honest. I'm not into the vintage wedding look anymore. It was cool at first, but now almost every wedding has that vintage style to their photos. I've seen so many of them, that they all look the same. Don't get me wrong, they're beautiful, stylistic, and I think the photographers who shoot them are incredibly talented. In fact, I have a few vintage photos of my own. But do photographers have to ALWAYS shoot with the vintage look? It kind of takes away the artistic voice of the photographer, don't you think? I don't mean to offend, but I really want to encourage photographers out there (especially beginning photographers) to constantly seek what their voice is in photography. And the first step is to be honest with yourself.

Here's the brutally honest truth about my photography: I suck at shooting traditional or "vintage" wedding photography. Trust me, I've tried for a while, but I'm simply just not good at that particular style. I wanted to get better at it, but after many attempts at the traditional and "vintage" look, I just stopped and pondered how I can approach photographing weddings in my own unique voice.

For me, I like telling more of a story in my work. I'm a film director, so I kind of have to be a storyteller! I love putting a bold feel to my photos with the use of creative lighting. So I asked a couple of friends to model for me so I can experiment and figure out my own unique voice to wedding photography. And here's what I shot:

It's not traditional. It's not vintage. This is my own unique voice in photography, and I'm proud of it. So seek what your unique voice is, and BE PROUD OF IT!

BROKEN

I wanted to do an emotion piece that centered on the word "bare" because when you're bare, you're left feeling vulnerable. I wanted to experiment and intently DID NOT focus on the technical aspects of each photo (like the sharpness, depth of field, etc). I wanted the "unsteadiness" of the camera to reflect the emotion of the character...at least I hope I did, lol. Let me know what you think!
