GREAT, ANOTHER "VINTAGE" PHOTO (part 1)

April 21, 2011

I'll be honest. I'm not into the vintage wedding look anymore. It was cool at first, but now almost every wedding has that vintage style to their photos. I've seen so many of them, that they all look the same. Don't get me wrong, they're beautiful, stylistic, and I think the photographers who shoot them are incredibly talented. In fact, I have a few vintage photos of my own. But do photographers have to ALWAYS shoot with the vintage look? It kind of takes away the artistic voice of the photographer, don't you think? I don't mean to offend, but I really want to encourage photographers out there (especially beginning photographers) to constantly seek what their voice is in photography. And the first step is to be honest with yourself.

Here's the brutally honest truth about my photography: I suck at shooting traditional or "vintage" wedding photography. Trust me, I've tried for a while, but I'm simply just not good at that particular style. I wanted to get better at it, but after many attempts at the traditional and "vintage" look, I just stopped and pondered how I can approach photographing weddings in my own unique voice.

For me, I like telling more of a story in my work. I'm a film director, so I kind of have to be a storyteller! I love putting a bold feel to my photos with the use of creative lighting. So I asked a couple of friends to model for me so I can experiment and figure out my own unique voice to wedding photography. And here's what I shot:

CAMERA: Canon 7D
LENS: Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC

It's not traditional. It's not vintage. This is my own unique voice in photography, and I'm proud of it. So seek what your unique voice is, and BE PROUD OF IT!

You have a point. However that style is very popular, because it is classic and timeless. People want beautiful, timeless photo's to capture the love they shared on their wedding day. Your photo- runaway bride? this is not a happy wedding photo, why would the bride be running away from his spouse. If I was that couple, I'd want my money back. Who wants to show their grandchildren a photo of grandma running away from grandpa? you wanna capture love, hope and commitment. Tell a story about that in your photos- capture the couple's story. But great quality and composition.

And of course, it's YOUR opinion on what you like, which you are entitled to, but wedding photographers get hired out... it's not ALL up to them what style. The bride and groom are the ones who say "We want vintage" or "we want traditional" and the photographer does what their client wants.

So, now, vintage is in. Next couple years, who knows.

Your picture would make more sense as an ad for something, not so much "wedding photography"

Loving these comments! Let's keep the conversation going! So what would you guys consider more important in wedding photography...capturing the love, or capturing the personality of the couple? And yes, I am more of a commercial photographer, so I tend to create stories. But I'd love to pick everyone's brains on what they aim to capture in their wedding photography! Let the conversation begin!

AMAZING IMAGE, Sid! I agree that it would work for commercial photography not for a wedding.
But it's fun and playful and we don't have to get too serious about it. A playful couple might really enjoy this photo. You rock, Sid!
